Test Day Tips: Reduce Anxiety and Perform Your Best

Practical advice for the morning of the ISEE — sleep, nutrition, and mindset.

Student ready for test day

The work is done. You've practiced for weeks. Now it's test day. Here's how to show up ready and perform your best.

The Night Before

  • Sleep: Get 8–9 hours. Don't stay up cramming. Rest matters more than last-minute review.
  • Pack your bag: ID, admission ticket, pencils, sharpener, eraser. No phones or smartwatches in the testing room.
  • Relax: Do something calming — read, watch a show, take a walk. Avoid anything that spikes anxiety.

The Morning Of

  • Eat breakfast: Protein and complex carbs. Avoid sugar crashes. Hydrate.
  • Arrive early: Plan for traffic. Give yourself 15–20 minutes before check-in.
  • Use the bathroom: Before the test starts. No breaks during sections.

During the Test

  • Breathe: If you feel anxious, take three slow breaths. It helps.
  • Skip and return: If a question stumps you, move on. Come back if you have time.
  • Don't second-guess: Your first instinct is often correct. Only change if you're confident you made a mistake.
  • Manage time: Don't spend too long on one question. Pace yourself.

After the Test

  • Don't dwell: You can't change your answers. Celebrate that you showed up and did your best.
  • Reflect: What worked? What would you do differently next time? Use that for future tests or schoolwork.
